Texas Tech Football Notebook: February 2022 National Signing Day Recap

The first group of players were officially announced as signing with Texas Tech. I looked up their Hudl highlights and embedded what I could find about each player. I also realize that I’m two commits behind on the Player Profile for the 2023 class, but there’s a lot happening /waves hands wildly/ .

CB/WR Sammy Morris (6-1/175) | Prosper (Prosper, TX) | Class of 2021

Morris is obviously/likely the son of the Sammy Morris, Assistant Director for Player Support Development. It appears that the younger Morris returned kickoffs for Prosper.

LB James Grando (6-3/200) | Cisco College (Cisco, TX) | Class of 2020

Grando appeared to play a bit with Cisco College, this is freshman season and the most recent Hudl video, so you sort of presume he’s only played one year, but I’m not absolutely certin.

RB Blake Bedwell (5-10/194) | SMU (Amarillo, TX) | Class of 2020

Bedwell played running back and linebacker at Amarillo before I think walking on at SMU. I think this is his junior video (because it is 2019), but am not totally sure.

WR Jordan Brown (5-11/188) | Kansas (DeSoto, TX) | Class of 2020

Brown walked on at Kansas and played a couple of games in 2020 and one game in 2021. I looked a bit and couldn’t find any Hudl highlights.

WR Haydon Wiginton (5-11/180) | Oklahoma State (Midlothian, TX) | Class of 2021

Wiginton walked on at Oklahoma State most likely, played at Midlothian Heritage i high school. The video embedded is his is his career highlights.

OL Dennis Wilburn (6-3/320) | Hutchinson C.C. (Humble, TX) | Class of 2020

Wilburn is probably not your typical walk-on, probably a bit better than what you might expect. Played center at Hutchinson C.C. and the video embedded is from the bowl game for them, which I had no idea that JUCO’s did bowl games. I think he may have also received some accolades, but can’t really confirm that other on Twitter. Also, a did you know that “Dennis Wilburn” was the name of general manager in Jerry Maguire, played by Glenn Frey.

OL Monroe Mills (6-6/300) | Oklahoma State (Columbia, Missouri) | Class of 2020

Mills was a 3-star recruit coming out of Columbia, Missouri, Mills committed and played at Oklahoma State. I don’t know if Mills is a scholarship player, my guess is yes, but I’m just not sure.

WR Drew Hocutt (6-0/190) | San Angelo University (Lubbock, TX) | Class of 2020

Hocutt is the son of Texas Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt and Drew played the last two years at San Angelo and prior to that he was at Frenship, catching 59 passes for 947 yards and 9 touchdowns his senior year.

QB/ATH Jacob Rodriguez (6-1/200) | Virginia (Wichita Falls, TX) | Class of 2020

Rodriguez did it all at Rider, playing quarterback as a senior, running back as a junior, plus playing safety. His older brother played linebacker for Texas Tech as a walk-on. Rodriguez was a 3-star recruit coming out of high school and had a decent offer list. As an aside, he’s with assistant coach Josh Bookbinder, who is the linebackers coach, so that’s where I’d place my bet. Not sure if he is a scholarship player.

I think these two players, OL Michael Shanahan (UT-Martin) and OL Cade Briggs (New Mexico), are on scholarship, so they I wasn’t including them in the list above. And I also believe that Erik Gray and Coy Eakin will sign, but because of the weather, that may have been delayed until Monday.

These are other players who announced on Twitter that they signed with Texas Tech, most likely as preferred walk-ons.
