Basketball

CBS Sports’ David Cobb ranks the top 25 transfers of 2022 with Fardaws Aimaq checking in at #5:

Aimaq averaged 18.9 points and 13.6 rebounds for a 20-12 Utah Valley team in 2021-22, and he began flashing his outside shot by hitting 43.5% of his 46 attempts from 3-point range. He was also a two-time WAC Defensive Player of the Year, which makes him a perfect fit for Texas Tech’s gritty defensive system under coach Mark Adams. His all-around game should make him an impact player for one of the Big 12’s top programs.

It should be noted that Iowa State to Texas guard Tyrese Hunter is #3, Terrence Shannon is #6, Baylor to Illinois forward Matthew Mayer is #13, and Kevin McCullar is #20.

Football

CBS Sports’ Shehan Jeyarajah has the latest Big 12 Championship odds and I think this is a situatioin where the oddsmakers maybe just like taking money from the more gullible, sort of like always having the Cowboys be favorites, they’ll always have irrational bettors and a lot of them. Vegas has the Longhorns at +175 with Oklahoma at +200 followed by Oklahoma State at +400. Texas Tech is way down the list (a value pick) at +6,000, only right above Kansas who is at +30,000.

Long shot — Texas Tech (+6000): The Red Raiders finally made it back to a bowl game in 2021 and brought in an exciting new coaching staff that just might be poised to help Texas Tech take the next step. Offensive coordinator Zach Kittley coached Bailey Zappe to the most productive passing season of all time before returning to Lubbock, and has intriguing quarterback and receiver rooms to work with. Defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter nearly had Oregon in the College Football Playoff and takes over a promising unit. Head coach Joey McGuire brings a pedigree of winning from his time in high school ball and at Baylor, along with recruiting chops that helped the Red Raiders land the No. 26 transfer class. Does Texas Tech really have a shot to win its first Big 12 title since the league formed? Who knows, but for 600-1 odds, it’s worth throwing down a Hamilton.
