Starting 5

1. Stats. Offensively, not a lot of good here, just meh to not really great. OSU is 308th in 3-point shooting so them shoot from deep (for the most part), 322nd in turnover percentage and 239th in free throw percentage. The Cowboys are dedent at shooting inside the arc, 106th overall, and are very good at offensive rebounding, 82nd overall. Defensively, pretty well elite across the board, the only negative is that teams shoot elite free throw percentage against them, which isn’t really their fault. Oklahoma State is 44th in the nation in holding teams in 3-point shooting, 29th in 2-point shooting, and 14th in block percentage. Things that they are just good at, 105th in turnover percentage.

2. Scouting. Kalib Boone is sort of the do-it-all for Oklahoma State, highest usage rate, terrific offensive rebounder, high block rate, and a great shooter inside the arc. Asberry is good overall, a terrific shooter (also inside the arc), but shoots 33% from outside, which is okay, but not great. Cisse is a rebounding and block machine. Elite at both of those things. Asberry and Thompson are both your shooters from outside, so if you can cover that, they’re basically covered.

3. How They Match Up. Texas Tech theoretically should win as long as they muster a decent offensive performance. OSU is so long and lean an shot-blocky that it’s a problem, but having a fully operational Aimaq should be a real advantage. Let’s get these players off with a win. It’s strange in that both teams aren’t very good at turning the ball over, OSU is not a good shooting 3-point shooting team, while Texas Tech is sort of down the middle of the road, 165th.

5. Official Site. The official site has their preview right here:

Texas Tech is set to host Oklahoma State in the regular-season finale at 5 p.m. on Saturday at the United Supermarkets Arena. Fans are encouraged to wear RED in a show of support.

The Red Raiders (16-14, 5-12 Big 12) are coming off a 67-63 loss at No. 3 Kansas on Tuesday, while the Cowboys (16-14, 7-10 Big 12) had their losing streak extended to five with a 74-68 loss to No. 7 Baylor on Monday. OSU had won five in a row before dropping five straight. The fourth game of that winning streak was a 71-68 win over Tech on February 8 in Stillwater. Tech was on a four-game winning streak until losses to No. 24 TCU last Saturday and to the Jayhawks who have secured the Big 12 regular-season championship.

“We know we’re good enough to beat anybody,” Texas Tech coach Mark Adams said. “We just have to close that margin. That thin line between winning and losing. That involves getting loose balls, shot selection, guarding. This last game is a big one for everyone. For seeding in the Big 12 and March Madness. It’s a do-or-die situation. Our guys know that. We expect them to play well. Our coaching staff is excited about their attitudes and preparation for this game.”
