Post-Game Thoughts: Texas Tech 73, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 64

Game Links:

Tortilla Tossin’ Player of the Game: I wanted Chance McMillian to start to warm up and he did, 17 points on 7 of 12, including 3 of 8 from deep, with 2 boards, 2 blocks, a steal and 2 turnovers.

The Motion:

  • I’m still out of town and didn’t get to watch the game. After the game, head coach Grant McCasland said that Texas Tech didn’t play very well and he needed to help them do that. I thought before the game, this should be a 20 point win for Texas Tech.
  • The shots from outside aren’t great, only 20.8% from beyond the arc and McCasland thinks that maybe just not making the extra pass. The team did sort of “get it” in that the team was 2 of 17 in the first half and in the second half, 3 of 7. It was probably easy to settle for shots to an extent.
  • The turnovers are still an issue, 6 in the first half and 11 in the second, which is partly why TAMU-CC stuck around.
  • Pop Isaacs is still looking for his shot, only 2 of 8 overall and 1 of 5 from deep with 3 turnovers (and 4 assists). He has the potential to be great, but part of being great is being consistently good.
  • Darrion Williams didn’t have a great game either, he was 0-4 from deep and just 2 of 6 overall, but he did have 14 rebounds and that’s impressive.
  • Free throws probably helped save this game, Texas Tech was 20 of 27, 74%, which is good and only allowed the Islanders to shoot 9 free throws all game.
  • No real advantage at points in the paint, offensive rebounds, 2nd chance points, or bench points. The one advantage was 15 fast break points to just 8 for the Islanders.
  • Up next? Texas Tech heads to the Bahamas for the Battle 4 Atlantis and their first game that we know they’ll play is No. 21 Villanova.
