Texas Tech baseball’s freshman class was ranked No. 21 by D1 Baseball:

Featuring top-150 Perfect Game signees Mac Heuer (No. 59), Landon Stripling (No. 76), TJ Pompey (No. 82) and Davis Rivers (No. 150 prospect), the Red Raiders 2023 class was previously rated No. 11 by Perfect Game Baseball.

Heuer was rated as the No. 1 pitcher in the State of Georgia and was drafted by the Cleveland Guardians in the 16th round of the 2023 MLB Draft. Two of the top players in the state, Pompey and Rivers were selected as the No. 7 and No. 13 players in the State of Texas, while Stripling checked in at No. 8 in the State of Georgia rankings.

Earlier in the week, three of Tech’s aforementioned four Top-150 signees were included in Perfect Games’ Top-100 College Freshman as Heuer checked in at No. 34 followed by Stripling (No. 55) and Pompey (No. 72).

If you want a list of all of the 2023 baseball commits you can see the list, Heuer is a big power pitcher (6-4/230) with Stripling and Pompey are middle infielders while Rivers is a catcher.

ESPN’s Craig Haubert has a list of the best transfer classes and we found out earlier this week that Texas Tech wasn’t done, adding 3 players to the class and it matters who is transferring in and who is transferring out. Haubert thinks that Texas Tech had the 6th best class, behind Mississippi, Louisville (who had Tyler Shough and Monroe Mills), Colorado, TCU, and NC State.

The Red Raiders won four of their last five games, including their bowl game, and are trying to carry that momentum into 2024. They signed a top-25 recruiting class that includes their highest-ranked recruit in the ESPN 300 era, WR Micah Hudson, and Texas Tech is also actively adding talent via the portal. Offensively, the Red Raiders are poised to return key contributors in QB Behren Morton and RB Tahj Brooks and are adding several more players on that side of the ball with transfers. QB Cameran Brown arrives from West Georgia, where he was the Gulf Shore Conference Offensive Freshman of the Year and provides Texas Tech a dual-threat player with several seasons of eligibility to develop. The arrival of the speedy five-star Hudson will generate plenty of excitement, but grad transfer Joshua Kelly brings experience and proven production after stops at Fresno State and most recently Washington State, where he had 61 catches for over 900 yards. They also added two of the better tight ends in the portal in Jalin Conyers and Johncarlos Miller II.

Red Raider Sports’ Ben Golan writes about West Texas recruits to keep an eye on and the good news is that Texas Tech is in early on almost every one of these guys and a handful are committed to Texas Tech for the 2025 class.

Red Raider Sports’ Julio Gonzales, Jr. has the Recruiting Six-Pack for the week with a look back at the 3 transfers linked above and a look ahead at some 2025 and beyond commits.

There will be a dunk contest of some of the football players at halftime of Saturday’s game against Kansas State.
