Texas Tech Football Notebook: First Scrimmage Notes; TE Henderson Commits

First scrimmage of the year was held on Saturday and this is the post-scrimmage recap from head coach Joey McGuire. As always, this is a non-transcript, which is not direct quotes, but me listening to the video and typing as fast as i can for those of you who can’t listen.

  • Excited, back full tilt and game situations. Thought we played fast. Defense came out fast, probably through 4 series only gave up a field goal and then the offense got going and Josh Kelly made some plays, great moves in space and got us going, the offense got rolling. In red zone lockout, offense dominated a touchdown with Brady Boyd, then another touchdown for him, and then Trey Jackson with a touchdown. Back and forth and saw some really good things. Had too many pre-snap penalties. That’s not uncommon in first scrimmage. Whoever started fast needs to start better and vice versa.
  • [On Brady Boyd] First touchdown he caught from the outside, and the second he caught in the slot. The great thing about him is he’s a coach’s kid and hope he plays for a long time, when he’s done playing he wants to coach. He can play all 4 positions. He’s another one as all of the receivers started slow, some drops, but came on strong.
  • The offensive line especially the 1’s and majority of the 2’s played well. The 3’s are both young groups. The 1’s didn’t get started off fast, not because of pressure. Ty Buchanan is starting right tackle, at guard is Caleb Rogers, center was Sheridan Wilson, Vinny Sciury is at left guard, and Sterling Porcher at left tackle. Next week we’ll shake it up, Davion Carter will play right guard. The stuff we didn’t convert on 1st downs wasn’t because of the offensive line.
  • It’s growing with Caleb, the things he does well, he’s in a phone booth and he’s so much more athletic than interior offensive linemen. He’s learning gap schemes. He’s doing a good job and would tell you. Davion, week 1 and some of this week played some center. He played center week 1 and he can play center without a doubt, trying to figure out our center between Sheridan, Rogers, and Davion.
  • A little banged up at outside linebacker. Isaac [Smith] and Joe [Adedire] only doing individual. Kason Long played some outside linebacker today, small town kids are used to playing both ways. Kids from big schools don’t do that. He played outside linebacker today, he has an infectious personality, Dylan Spencer got banged up early, just held him out from the scrimmage and he’ll be back, Isaiah Crawford had some tendonitis in his knee and held him out.
  • Kason is 260 and he’s gaining weight. We have a lot of guys that can play the boundary backer, if we can pick up another guy, Sam Carrell, had a foot injury right before the bowl game and still recovering, the outside linebackers are thin right now and if he shows promise, we’ll leave him there.
  • Kelby Valsin had a really good day today. He had some really big catches and did a good job. T.J. West had some 50/50 balls and was right there, couldn’t come down with them, that means the defense is winning, but both of them are with the 2’s. Kelby had a really good day. The first day I didn’t think he was playing fast. We have a red and black field, the black field is the 3’s and 4’s and the first day we moved Kelby to the black field, don’t know if was confidence, he had a really good day and came back with a really good practice on the red field and he’s showed up today.
  • Isaiah [Collins] is the only one here, see the others in track. Malik [Esquerra] was here today, he has the 3rd fastest time in the nation in the hurdles. We always tell them that they don’t have to be here, but any time a kid can win a state championship, I don’t want to take that away from them. Peyton [Morgan] has one of the fastest times in the hurdles, Eddie [Smith] and Charles [Anderson] were both big basketball players for their teams. If you recruit fast guys, you want them running and running in state, just learning the playbook. Malik has grown another inch and good to see his presence.
  • Competition at left tackle, Sterling is ahead, he’s played a lot more football than Mo [Maurice Rodriques]. Mo is learning fast and he truly weighs 340 right now. He’ll continue to work that, if we were playing now, Sterling, but Mo being so big he covers people up. I’ve been proud of the young guys, Jacob Ponton is really good and Ellis Davis coming in May.
  • I always look at offensive linemen, very few freshmen who can play, redshirt freshmen year are still in a development, as a sophomore you should be playing, been in the program for 3 years. Sheridan isn’t the surprise, he is over 300 pounds and doing that for the 1st time every weight in and the maturity in his body.
  • It’s going to be good to take a break and relax, we’ll come back and get after it Monday afternoon. I have a trainer friend that I recommended to X to train with. He told me that Xavier White was going to run well, ran a very fast time, I’m very fired up for this kid, no matter what, do this if you can because life is waiting for you on the other side. I do think he’s going to get an opportunity with an NFL team and I was fied up to see him do well.

Quarterback Behren Morton mic’d up for practice:

Mineral Wells 4-star tight end Prestynn Harrison (6-6/210) announced his commitment to Texas Tech, making him the 10th commitment of the 2025 class. Rivals, 24/7 Sports, ESPN, and On3 have their recruiting profiles with offers from Arkansas State, North Texas, Texas State, and Vanderbilt. Harrison has some older highlights on his Hudl page, but at that size, you can guess he’s a large man on the field and I also found this Rivals article about Harrison:

Harrison is an intriguing prospect with his size and ball skills. I think he will be a good fit into what the Red Raiders like to offensively. I don’t imagine we will see him blocking much, but instead filling the receiving tight end role in the modern college offense. He has strong hands and with an outside receiver background, he understands route running and spacing on the field.
