On the Gridiron

The big news from yesterday was that Frisco Panther Creek safety Donovan Webb (6-0/165) committed to Texas Tech. Webb is considered the top safety in Texas and a top-50 player in the state of Texas. Webb’s top-4 was Texas Tech, Kansas State, Michigan and Notre Dame, among dozens of other Power Four offers. As a junior, Webb had 120 tackles, 5 interceptions, 2 forced fumbles, 2 punt returns for a touchdown and also played a bit of offense as well. This is a pretty big deal for Texas Tech and it seems as if Joey McGuire has been gearing up for a few days. There are a few additional commitments that I think that McGuire is heavily invested in Frenship’s receiver Chase Campbell and Temple defensive end Jamarion Carlton.

Dave Campbell’s Texas Football’s Carter Yates has a good story about how this commitment happened, including thoughts from Donovan’s father, Dennis, who played at Kansas State.

Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Don Williams on his discussion with Joey McGuire about how McGuire sees the recruiting class to play out, the idea that there will be 20 to 22 commits each year.

Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Don Williams on running back J’Koby Williams, who could do kickoff returns and punt returns in addition to running back duties.

On the Hardwood

Christian Anderson is absolutely dealing for Germany’s U19 FIBA World Cup team. They will play Australia on July 4th.

Texas Tech’s Wes Bloomquist continues his Q&A series with freshman guard Nolan Groves:

What do you want to develop the most in your game?

“I think I need to develop my shooting. It’s very obvious to me in these open gym workouts that we’ve been having that it’s no longer like high school where I’m going to get a wide-open shot. You have to have to be flying off a screen, shooting it on the run with a guy closing on your face. Making those tougher 3s is something I really want to improve on and be ready when the season gets here.”
