On the Gridiron

Things were hinting this way yesterday and then there were fireworks after lunch on July 4th as Texas Tech secured the commitment of Mansfield Lake Ridge 5-star tackle Felix Ojo (6-6/275). Ojo was supposedly down to Texas, Ohio State, Michigan and Florida, with the lean being towards the Longhorns. Ojo is the #5 player in the nation, the #1 tackle and the #2 player in the state based on 24/7 Sports and I am sure you could argue with one ranking or another. Ojo made it seem that he was committing to Texas, but then mom had a hat underneath the table that wasn’t those top 4 and that was Texas Tech. Ojo was offered by everyone and then some. It would probably be easier to consider who wasn’t offering Ojo than who was offering. It’s also been mentioned that Ojo had a birthday yesterday, his 18th birthday, which means that he’s really young for his age. That’s going to matter because Ojo has the tools, but the strength is a big deal, and it’s going to take time for Ojo to get that strength of guys who have been in college 4 years. I hope this doesn’t turn into a Micah Hudson situation where it’s demanded that he plays as a true freshman. He’s got to develop that strength.

Recruiting profiles: On3 & 24/7 Sports.

On3’s B. Golan spoke to Ojo about his commitment.

It is also being reported that Ojo’s deal is 3-years for $5.1 million, which sounds great I guess. The addition in the tweet below, says that this is one of the largest deals in CFB history and well, it’s like 3 weeks old to be part of this new revenue sharing situation so I guess that’s an accurate statement. The other part is that some folks are upset that the contract terms are being reported  is a slight against Texas Tech. I say, let them talk. I think the figure being reported below is more complicated that what’s really happening and if anything, take pride in how this is all working. I can almost guarantee that Texas Tech is at the forefront of all of this. They’ve been ahead of the game for two years now. I feel pretty good about all of this. Bring on the comments about salary. We’re in a different world.

Dave Campbell’s Texas Football’s Greg Powers has a scouting report on Ojo.

On the Hardwood

Germany took down Australia 80-67, led by Christian Anderson’s 18 points. You can watch the highlights below, Anderson is #3. Germany will play Slovenia today (they played earlier in group play) with Grant McCasland’s USA squad playing Switzerland or New Zealand.
