We have some movement!
- Luke Bamgboye announced that he was going to enter the portal yesterday. This makes a bit of sense considering that I think he thought he might have a bigger role with Texas Tech. That just never happened and I am trying to think of the lesson I learned when thinking about him prior to the year, which is that he apparently did one thing really well, which was block shots. Let’s say that was an 85 grade, but he lacked the ability to play high-end post defense, post scoring, and he continually fouled, so maybe those other three he was a 55, 45, and maybe a 30. He can do a thing really well, but lacks in other things and that’s important to keeping him on the floor. And if you want to dig some advanced stats, Bamboye had an OBPM of -1.0 and a DBPM of 5.1 coming into Texas Tech (that’s offensive box-plus minus and defensive box-plus minus), while he had 4.7 fouls committed per 40 minutes at VCU. That didn’t change all that much at Texas Tech, where he was -1.9 OBPM, 4.9 DBPM, and 6.0 fouls committed per 40 minutes.
- I’d also like to add that for a player like Tyeree Bryan, he probably would have graded 70 or 75 based on the video that I saw and his stats at his prior stops. He was a good shooter, 59% eFG%, hardly ever turned the ball over and was a 43% 3-point shooter with a 126.7 offensive rating, a BPM of 5.9 (which is good). You can’t always hit but by all metrics a player like Bryan was a good signing last year. Bryan ended up with an offensive rating of 112.5, 2.2 BPM, but lost his shot, making just 29% of his 3-point shots.
- And if you’d like to do a Donovan Atwell comparison, coming into Texas Tech he was a 39% 3-point shooter and had an offensive rating of 110.0 and a BPM of 0.2. At Texas Tech he finished with an offensive rating of 142, shot 46% from deep, and a BPM of 8.1. He absolutely out-performed his previous stats without question. Atwell turned out to be the player that the staff thought Bryan was going to be.
- Regardless, I’m good making an error on 6-5 or 6-6 wings that can shoot and play defense.
The news that you are actually waiting for, which is Texas Tech received a commitment from Hofstra guard Cruz Davis.
Player: Cruz Davis
Height: 6’3″
Weight: 170
Transferring From: Hofstra Pride
Hometown: Plano, TX
Stats: 37.9 minutes; 20.1 points; 44% FG%; 40% 3P%; 83% FT%; 3.7 rebounds; 4.7 assists; 0.3 blocks; 1.1 steals; 2.5 turnovers
Davis is a high usage and highly skilled offensive player. Offensive rating of 115.8, which is fantastic, a BPM of 4.2, again, that’s pretty darned good and PRPG! (which is an overall offensive efficiency rating) of 4.4, which is elite. Not much of a rebounder and isn’t going to get a ton of steals, but he’s really good from the free throw line, 84%.
