The spring game was last night and with it being on Friday night, there was no way that I was going to be able to go, so this was largely for the folks in the 806 and I think that’s great. And it wasn’t so much a scrimmage as a practice apparently and that’s also fine. Coverage below.
Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Don Williams: Brendan Sorsby throws 4 TD passes in Texas Tech football spring game
“A lot less tortillas were thrown at me,” he said, “but it was fun. It was good to be out there on the right side of the sideline, get the feet wet a little bit, throw a couple of touchdowns in the Jones and, hopefully, we can throw a few more in a few months.”
Sorsby’s TD passes were to Jett Carpenter for 3 yards in the first half and, in the second half, to Jalen Jones for 18 yards, to Donte Lee Jr. for 25 yards and to Micah Hudson for 8 yards, the latter on the last play of the scrimmage.
“It’s kind of nice walking into a starting role and having the team already kind of respect you a little bit coming in,” said Sorsby, who joined the team in January as one of the most coveted QBs in the transfer portal. “You’ve still got to get to know the guys and everything, but it’s been really good.”
Red Raider Sports’ Lane Selph: Ben Roberts Recaps Spring in Media Availability Following Friday’s Game
Ben Roberts was also awarded today for his work in the weight room, as he won the “strength award” from the 2025 season during halftime of the spring game. Here is what Roberts had to say about what his work in the weight room means to him. “The strength staff, those are some of the closest people on the team to me, just because they are with me day in and day out. So, I enjoy going there. I enjoy pushing myself. It’s just another opportunity to compete.”
Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Don Williams: UNT, NC State games off Texas Tech football 2027 schedule
NC State officials told their Tech counterparts recently that because of the change in the ACC scheduling format, they are exercising a contract buyout on the 2027 game in Lubbock. That was the return game on a two-game series in which Tech played at NC State in 2022. The two-game series was announced on April 19, 2016.
NC State’s opting out leaves Tech, for the moment, with only five home games in 2027. That prompted Tech’s decision to buy out the road game at North Texas, which Tech athletics director Kirby Hocutt had said previously he was content to keep for the benefit of Red Raiders’ fans in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.

Non-transcript of head coach Joey McGuire:
- Spring games are interesting because we’ve listened to calls and checks, the advantage can sometimes go to the defense. Still things to clean up. Proud of the offense. Good job of eliminating pre-snap penalties. Defensively, we have had some. I know we will clean that up. Came out healthy. We stayed thud. Had one live rush. Had a live practice and tackled so well and we have the most returning tackles this year. When we put that first group out there, the only guy who hasn’t played Peyton Morgan, but Ben Roberts, Austin Romaine, John Curry, Trey White, and Adam Trick. Finish the semester strong in the finals. Get 3 1/2 weeks off and really hammer our strength and conditioning.
- It all worked out together. We didn’t have a week where we could scrimmage early. I don’t like scrimmaging when we have a clinic, they want to watch a practice. Had short-yardage and goal line that was physical and other physical practices and cut back. Want to come out as healthy as possible and have 2 pre-season games. With thud up front it is pretty much live.
- [The 2027 class] I think it is going to be the highest rated in 24/7 composite, but to be the highest ranked you have to sign 22 or 23 players, but on Rivals we have a better chance. Last year was the highest ranked class and this year has a chance. January has a chance to be huge. I feel that the guys are locked in and can spend more time in Lubbock. It locks in those guys who stay committed.
- Jaylen Jones playing that slot. He had some plays some plays. Trey White had some plays. Brendan Sorsby, that interception, he can’t go back to that side, it was good to see Peyton Morgan make that play. He led the state in interceptions that year. He has great ball skills and covering a lot of ground.
- I’m excited about the 2027 schedule and hoping it gets pushed to 24 teams in the playoffs and forces the renegotiation of the television contracts and get to that 2nd Monday in January and what needs to move is the national championship and the playoffs. We could shorten camp and we do camp because we always do it that way. It’s not the same game it was 10, 20 or 30 years ago. Anxious and hopeful it happens and then talk about playing on Thanksgiving and getting into the playoffs.
- Hunter Zambrano, very proud of him, he’s always played tackle and that’s a hard transition. He’s gotten better and feels comfortable. He’s good in pass pro and continue to get better in the run game. Jordan Church is a mauler he has a good stance and good bend and generates a lot of power off the football. Thud is not conducive to the run game. I do think this offensive line has a chance to be good and there is real depth behind them, Cash Cleveland and Danny Sill, D’Athnonis Upshaw, and Felix Ojo and Ellis Davis, the more reps the better.
- There was probably 5 designed to move around the pocket. That’s something he can do. It was a touchdown and I blew the whistle and he split the defenders and he would have scored on that play. He didn’t open up tonight and he’s a lot faster than he was tonight and he throws well on the run. I think that’s only going to help us and big games. I’ve gone back and watched a lot of Houston and they have a really good defensive coordinator and not enough people are talking about Houston on the portal. Rivals has Houston ranked high. We play teams like that when we can move the quarterback.
- I think we have a chance to have one of the best run games in the country, between the offensive line and the 3-headed monster at running back. The tight ends and Sorsby being a dual-threat quarterback. If we can run the ball then we have some real play-action and deep balls.
- We’ll keep at the starting safety and do it in camp. Peyton went with the 1’s and BJ into the boundary and BJ has been in the field and Malik in the boundary. Oliver Miles will have something to say about it and he’s not 100% just yet, but Peyton and Malik can play. Cole is so smart and made the comment and he said that you’ll be amazed how good the safeties are going to be with another year with Rob Greene and Cole is a huge fan of Coach Greene and that’s showing up with Peyton and Malik.
- [AJ and Mateen in 3rd down package] We did some of our Cheetah package. We were fairly vanilla, tried a double-pass. But I think those two guys have a presence inside and where that will help us in the pass rush games and Trey and Adam have a good idea what we want to do and those 4 guys are going to be really good rushing the passer. Guyton is another guy who can get after the quarterback.
- That time is all high school recruiting and finish that 2027 class and working on 2028 class and make it the best class possible. Will be a ton of studies coming out of spring and what we need to get better at. They will do a lot of self-scouting and what we didn’t do well last year to push in camp and focus on getting better.
- Stone Harrington kicking 57-yarder. We needed to start missing some, last year we were 1 of 6 and we had a good spring and telling Kenny Perry that maybe we need to miss some, but we are really fortunate to have Stone Harrington, physically he has such a strong leg and it was the mental part. He’s locked in. Will Carroll is going to be a weapon for us, but he is also an elite holder and he was sick last week so we had different guys holding, but those kickers are pretty particular and missed 3 kicks and so we said we need to recruit Australian holders. Ian is another good field goal kicker. Ian can help on kickoff and has a strong leg and keep Stone healthy.
