If you have followed along, I decided in February that I’d take Youssouf to 3 different football camps. These camps are about $60 each and the 3 I chose were SMU, which was last Sunday, TCU on Friday, and Texas Tech today. I honestly have no idea what I’m doing, but I know that Youssouf is talented and I also know that I need to start getting him and hi s name out there. I know that it’s part of the process to get a scholarship.
The SMU camp was fine. Most of these camps they are dividing these kids into their particular classes. There’s also maybe 30 or so different colleges at these camps, which is great because they can see a lot of kids without having to travel to hundreds of different places. They had all of the kids together running some routes on air and Youssouf did well. But about halfway through, they sent the 2028, 2029, and 2030 classes to a different field where there were no coaches really watching. At the time, it was expected I suppose, these coaches need to focus on the kids that are probably eligible to help right now.
The TCU camp was on Friday and I must say that the TCU campus is very nice. Yo did the camp thing and we never saw him on any fields. Turns out he was in the indoor practice facility the entire time as they had the 2029 and 2030 classes inside and he said that all of the coaches that were there went outside. He said that he didn’t enjoy this as much as the SMU camp.
This morning, Youssouf and I hit the road for Lubbock and the Texas Tech camp at 5:30 this morning. The camp started at noon and we arrived at 11:40. We were immediately greeted by someone from the staff named Michael. He’s very friendly and he didn’t want anything other than to simply greet us. I had spent nearly 6 hours in the car so I left to go for a 4-mile run around campus. It was hot, hence the 4 miles and not 6. I grabbed my things and went inside and tried to find Youssouf. The camp didn’t really start until 1:30, but the first hour and a half was taking measurements and 40 times. I didn’t need to be there for that. I didn’t see Youssouf for the first 45 or 50 minutes. I had not eaten lunch and I ate my gas station ham sandwich and protein cookie and ate in the end zone of the indoor facility. I eventually saw him and he said that he was going to be outside. I caught 2 reps, caught 1 and then caught the other, but the defender pulled it away from him, and they he went back inside.
At that time Yo told me that the incoming freshmen were in grey/gray, the incoming sophomores were in white, the incoming juniors were in red and the incoming seniors were in black. Yo also told me that the coaches had come up to talk to him, including Coach McGuire. I suppose that I should also note that Youssouf is with the receiver group as that what he wants to play. Yo said that the coaches wanted him with the better receiver group, the older kids. He was the only incoming freshman in the group, which was pretty cool. He played really well and it was great. I introduced myself to Coach Cochran. I knew that he recruited the area where we live, which is Kaufman and he mentioned that his brother is the head coach in Lindale, which is not too far away, close to Tyler. More work on air and Yo received really specific instruction from Coach Johnson. I made an entire X/Twitter thread about the day. Please excuse typos.

You could tell that he was enjoying coaching him up. After the camp ended, Yo was sort of absent and he came to grab his phone and said that Coach Johnson wanted his X/Twitter handle. About 2 weeks ago (maybe, not totally sure on timeline) I decided that we needed to make the jump and get him a X/Twitter account. I know that this is how football coaches communicate. Basketball still lives in the world of Instagram. He was still gone for a while, so I grab his things and head in the direction that I think he’s at and he said that Coach Johnson wanted to meet me. So we wait around as other players want photographs with Johnson. I introduce myself to Coach Xavier White and he talked about how well Yo did and thanked him for the kind words. Once we finally got to Johnson, he wanted to let Youssouf and myself know that Texas Tech was offering Youssouf a scholarship. I was in shock I think. We thanked Johnson and told him how thankful we were for the opportunity.
After a great camp I am honored to receive my first scholarship to @TexasTechFB! Thank you @JoeyMcGuireTTU and @COACHJUICE_ 👆🏾@jkbtjc_53 @BnanceTTU @Iam_xwhite14 pic.twitter.com/DrUU0Z2b4L

We walk over to Coach McGuire and he asked if we had heard that they’re offering Youssouf a scholarship, we confirmed that Johnson did tell us and we were very grateful. An incredibly cool moment. We went outside and called my wife, she was on her way to San Antonio for a conference. She thought it was a joke at first, but it was the real deal. We head towards our hotel and knew that we needed to clean up before going out for dinner and we crafted his X/Twitter post announcing the offer. I decided to treat Yo to the Ponto Gaucho Brazilian Steakhouse and it was great. The staff was so friendly and the food was terrific.
To wrap up the Texas Tech camp, it was much better than TCU and SMU and that’s not necessarily bias (although I could understand if you think that it was). The younger kids were not ignored (if you can play then you can play) and I’d also say that this was more of a developmental and showcase camp as it was anything else. Players that likely will not play in college were getting in work and tips. There were a ton of current players hanging around and helping. Too many players to mention, but drop a name and they were likely there. Lots of buy-in from the players.
We head back to Kaufman tomorrow morning. I know that some of you have been along for the ride for years and well, you all are about to get a very intimate look at how the whole thing works.
I also took some new photos, so you won’t have to see the same ones over and over for the header photo.
