On Ignoring the Paxton-Campbell Story
You’ll note that I didn’t link to or mention the story regarding Cody Campbell contributing $274,300 to a Ken Paxton PAC.
For some background as to why I ignored it. Wednesday night is my late night taking Yo to practice, I usually don’t get to bed until 10:30 and when you wake up at 3:30, that’s not a lot of z’s. I was already running out of time and thought that this situation needed deftness on my part, something I didn’t really have time for.
The other part was that it was clearly a political story and the only outlet reporting it was Texas Tribune. As you know, I try to avoid the political messes as much as possible here at STP. I didn’t even read the Texas Tribune story, the headline was sufficient for me to get the gist. Last night I decided to see if I could find the actual link to the PAC and lucky for you I found it. To be fair, had I gone to the Texas Tribune article, they did link to the actual source, but I found it my own way.
In any event, there’s no bias in linking to the actual source. It is what it is. What isn’t really reported anywhere is that John Sellers, the other half of Double Eagle, also contributed the same amount as Campbell.
For me, Campbell and Sellers have brought more to the programs at Texas Tech than I could imagine and I have a difficult time being too upset at the situation. I’d also add that folks are delusional if they didn’t think that boosters didn’t already have an outsized role in the direction of athletic programs. I don’t live in a world where I can influence very much so I’m going to stay in my lane about how this all works. I also don’t think there was any harm necessarily, at least not based on what we found out. I reserve the right to change my mind on this, but don’t think this was a huge deal.

Remember when Michigan got holier than thou about playing Texas Tech (even cancelled a volleyball match) because Texas Tech supported Sorsby. Well, Michigan AD Warde Manuel knew his football head coach Sherrone Moore (who was married) was having an affair with Moore’s executive assistant and directed Moore not to travel with her. It’s always best not to throw stones and get a moral high horse when your house isn’t pristine. Michigan spent $12 million on lawyers to complete the investigation.
