I forgot to post Youssouf’s most recent highlights. Kaufman played Ft. Worth Dunbar, who doesn’t even have a freshman or JV team, so not particularly close game, but he had 200 all-purpose yards and 2 touchdowns. For those of you asking about Fitsum, I can promise you that he and I are so locked in on so many other things (we currently obsessed with Lanterns on HBO) that are not worthy of posting highlights on X/Twitter.

On the Gridiron
The Big 12’s availability report was released last night and the secondary appears to be in a bit of a pickle. I often wonder how much to trust the depth chart (PDF) and of course Boyd is listed behind Davin Martin at cornerback while Miles is listed behind Peyton Morgan is listed at strong safety. If the depth chart is correct, this would mean that Martin and Tarrion Grant would see more time. If there is no other option other than freshmen at field safety behind Morgan (back in the summer, behind Morgan it was Aaron Bradshaw and Braylan McDonald). My guess is that you see a heavy rotation of Malik Esquerra and Brendan Jordan along with Peyton Morgan in some form or fashion.

Red Raider Sports’ Lane Selph on the Kenny Perry media scrum yesterday:
“Way better,” Perry said of the overall special teams performance. “I thought our guys really came to play, definitely our kickoff cover team. We held them to 16.4 yards a return in that condition.”
The weather in Corvallis created another challenge for Texas Tech’s coverage units, but Perry did not use the conditions as an excuse. Instead, he came away encouraged by how the Red Raiders handled them while also working several younger players into the rotation.
“It doesn’t matter who it is, where it is, you’ve got to cover kicks, and we’ve done a good job of that in the past,” Perry said. “We had a lot of new guys playing and we had guys get hurt. We played a lot of young guys. I thought our returners were really good. Malcolm(Simmons), Kenny (Johnson) and JJ (Jalen Jones), I thought all those guys hit it really good, and I was proud of everybody.”
Red Raider Sports’ Mason Turnbow on the Texas Tech defense ready to turn the page and focus no Houston:
“Well, I mean they’re really good on offense. Slade Nagle, a friend of mine, worked with him at Tulane several years ago. He does a great job. He’s always done a really good job. The thing I really respect about Slade is he’s a no-ego guy. Shiel said, “I mean, he just wants to win the ball game, whatever it takes, whatever game he’s got to call.” He’s not worried about stats. He’s not worried about how much he runs for, how much he throws for. He just wants to win the game. And if he’s got to play a certain style to get that done, he’s willing to do that, and they’ve got that in their package.

Texas Tech Wide Receiver Kenny Johnson is leading the team in receiving and catches outside of J’Koby Williams. Johnson said that he and QB Will Hammond have a great connection through two games. Those two are only going to have a better connection with each other as the games go on
“I think we’ve been doing really good. It’s really hard, I mean, we’ve only had two games together. We had the offseason stuff, but I think the games really help us get those experience looks that we needed. I think we’re only going to get better. I think he’s been doing good for what he’s been given, and we’re going to take our shots and do what we need to do. I think he’s been playing good.”

You always remember your first, and that’s the case for Kenny Johnson and Cameron Dickey. Johnson’s fondest memory of his high school days involves an impressive stat line in his varsity debut.
“I had a crazy game,” Johnson recalled with a chuckle. “My first game, I think I had like six catches, five touchdowns, 200 (yards).”

CBS announcer Adam Brenneman had some thoughts on the game, including some thoughts that the Will Hammond and Tommy Castellanos offenses are entirely different and I really don’t know about that Castellanos may end up replacing Hammond, although I don’t think that he will. A full season at Florida State in 2025, Castellanos had a QB rating of 143 and whatever you think about Hammond, he currently has a rating of 152. I think we’ve seen what Castellanos is, and I think using him as it is currently situated sits fine with me.
