Texas Tech’s 14th commitment is Tavares Elston, Jr., a linebacker from Gulf Shores, Alabama (every time I say Alabama in my head, I say it like Forest Gump).

RedRaiderSports’ Ben Golan spoke with Elston about his commitment and why he chose Texas Tech after his visit.

“It was great. He (McGuire) cares about his players, not just being on the field and playing but as people. He was really excited for me when I committed. I think he really wants to coach me and I felt like it was family so I made the right decision.”

Elston Jr.’s player hosts for the weekend were linebacker Derrick Lewis II and running back Tahj Brooks and he enjoyed spending time with them.

“My host was Derrick Lewis, they call him D-Lew. He plays linebacker. He was a great host. Also the running back, Tahj Brooks.

On the visit we did a lot of everything. The facilities were top-notch, probably some of the best facilities in college. We also talked about the future plans and how they’re gonna knock down the south end zone. My favorite part of the visit was really the photoshoot.”

Elston is an explosive athlete, an explosive tackler (I don’t think I’ve ever typed that phrase before, but that’s what I thought when watching his highlights. Elston’s highlights exhibit how he runs from sideline to sideline and his quick-twitch is really on display. I don’t know how Elston isn’t more highly recruited, but whatever. Both Georgia Tech and UCF offered after Elston committed to Texas Tech so there’s that. And I’d also add that when a player looks this good on film there’s sometimes a reason he’s not more highly recruited, sometimes grades or attitude, but with McGuire, I tend to believe that Elston is just overlooked for whatever reason. This is really a situation where Elston is the prototypical linebacker for the Big 12.
