Texas Tech has added a preferred walk-on in Abernathy athlete Anthony Smith.

The preferred walk-on part is a surprise and I normally don’t do profiles (usually for lack of time) of preferred walk-ons, but this seems interesting because he had 12 scholarships available to end up choosing Texas Tech. White suffered a knee injury in February of 2022 that’s kept him out his entire senior season, so maybe this is a make-good situation when White is healthy and he’ll eventually get scholarshipped?

Red Raider Sports’ Ben Golan has the details:

“I would say the coaching staff and the relationship I have with them throughout the whole journey of my recruiting. It’s very close to home, family is here and it’s a good environment.”

White’s recruitment to Texas Tech was led by director of player personnel James Blanchard, head coach Joey McGuire and secondary coach Marcel Yates.

“They’ve been seeing me as a Red Raider fan and a Red Raider player. All three of them are for sure the top three relationships that I’ve had and those relationships are really the reason I’m picking Texas Tech.

They were very excited for me picking Texas Tech. First thing they said was ‘Lets go!’ and ‘Let’s get that knee right and let’s put a show on’.”

Noted in the linked article (which you should read) is that White will likely play defense. White’s obviously a play-maker and is one of the bigger more athletic payers on the field, high-points the ball really well on defense, and has really terrific speed that he exhibits on offense.
