Texas Tech Football

It was reported earlier this week that Emmett Jones would be the new Passing Game Coordinator and receivers coach for the Oklahoma Sooners. That’s a bit upsetting, you sort of hate to see Jones arrive from Kansas and then leave after only a year. Yesterday it was announced that Joey McGuire would hire Justin Johnson as assistant head coach, passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach. Johnson attended Houston as an undergrad, staring for the Cougars before starting that coaching grind and eventually starting his career at Kansas. Johnson would spend a year there, then a year at Houston, and the last 3 years at Baylor coaching running backs. I can’t say that I know that much about Johnson so for me to say that this is an upgrade over Jones, I dunno? The one takeaway is that McGuire replaced Jones pretty quickly and the assistant was at a Power Five program, a rival, so even though Texas Tech may have taken a hit, Baylor also maybe took a hit. The one thing that I think you should still consider is that the transfer portal is a real thing and Jones may convince current Texas Tech receivers to leave for Oklahoma. We’ll see.

Congrats to Nehemiah Martinez and Dennis Wilburn for earning scholarships moving forward!

Syracuse defensive end Steve Linton (6-5/219), a redshirt sophomore last year, has committed to Texas Tech. Linton is from Dublin, Georgia. Linton played in 11 games this past year and finished with 22 tackles, 6 tackles for a loss, 3.5 sacks, and 2 fumble recoveries.

Red Raider Sports’ Justin Apodaca has his top defensive candidates to break out in 2023 and here’s just one of them:

Ty Kana – Inside Linebacker

After a steady season from Krishon Merriweather, he has graduated from Texas Tech and the coaching staff will have the tall task to replace him at the MIKE.

Kana, the 2021 recruit, will be a redshirt freshman next season and should have the opportunity to make an impact.

There was a ton of buzz around Kana after his commit and throughout spring and fall camps prior to the season and one would assume he’s just gotten better after a year in the system.
