Texas Tech Spring Football Preview: Kickers and Longsnappers

Texas Tech Spring Football Previews: Defensive Backs | Linebackers | Defensive Line | Offensive Line | Receivers and Tight Ends | Quarterbacks and Running Backs

Placekickers and Punters

I didn’t know most of these names other than McNamara and Wolff, so I just tried to find something on these guys, sometimes successful and sometimes not.

Austin McNamara: The unquestioned punter and maybe one of the best punters to ever wear the red and black. Averaging a shade over 48 yards a punt, good for 5th in the nation, and 3.2 punts a game. I’m sure that Kittley will want to lower that punts per game figure.

Trey Wolff: Wolff was the kickoff specialist as he had 72 kickoffs, for 63 yards a kickoff, and 61% of those were for a touchback (and none were out of bounds). We’ll see if Wolff gets the opportunity to also handle field goals.

Grant Nikel: Nickel is a redshirt freshman place kicker from Grand Oaks High School in Spring.

Landon Reeves: Reeves kicked at Ottawa University in Surprise, Arizona for a bit and transferred to Texas Tech.

Gino Garcia: Garcia is a transfer from Houston Baptist where he kicked field goals making 9 of 10, with a long of 59 yards. My guess is that he and Wolff will compete for that place kicker position and it wouldn’t surprise me if Garcia wins it.

Long Snappers

Jacob Mauch: Mauch is a transfer from Mt. San Antonio College where he was a tight end and long snapper.

Jackson Knotts: Knotts is from Plant City, Florida where we learn he’s friends with Austin McNamara and that he also set a state record in the javelin 57.23 meters, 2 meters further than the prior state record.
